WELCOME

Thanks for visiting the Desktop General Counsel website.  Like the book, this site is intended to assist you, the contractor, with legal issues; the easy things and the more complicated ones. We cannot offer legal advice and we are not offering legal advice.  Instead, the book and the site are intended to provide information that will help you recognize a potential problem before it becomes a legal problem, or if you are in the midst of a legal issue, it will help you understand what the legal issue is and how you may want to deal with it.

Desktop General Counsel is written for all contractors, whether they are new to the industry or experienced and sophisticated builders.  The law is the law, and the more you know about it, the better prepared you will be to avoid the ramifications of doing something that you would have been better off not doing.

We hope you will enjoy the book and the website.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

John P. McGill is a journeyman carpenter, licensed general contractor, and a construction law attorney.  He received his JD with distinction from the University of the  Pacific, McGeorge School of Law, and is a member of the school’s Traynor Honor  Society. He has been involved in the construction industry for more than 40 years; building, representing contractors, teaching, writing and speaking on various aspects of the industry. His law practice is, and has been, almost exclusively representing and advising contractors and suppliers in business, administrative, and litigation matters involving both public works projects and private works projects.
FOR LESS THAN THE COST OF TEN MINUTES OF AN ATTORNEY’S TIME,
you can find the answers to most of the construction law questions you may confront in the construction industry in California. DESKTOP GENERAL COUNSEL is a comprehensive guide to California construction law written in plain English for contractors. If you ever do need an attorney you will know what to ask and what the answer means when you hear it.
